i want to bid on a dvd from ebay that is region one im not sure if i have a multi region dvd player is a ps2 or a computer dvd drive capable of playing different region dvd’s?

Don’t know about PS2 but computers are capable of playing region 1 or 2.

BUT… you have to manually change the region in Windows and it will only let you do it a limited number of times (3 from memory). Then it blocks and you’re stuck on whatever the last one you changed to is.

Multi Region DVD?

September 25, 2009 - 4:47 am 2 Comments

A friend of mine bought me a few DVDs from ebay.uk, and will be bringing it back to Malaysia soon. Question is, she said that the DVDs will only play with a multi region player; and I don’t use DVD players, only the DVD writermaster from Samsung SH-W162 series. Can I still go about playing the dvd? Or do I have to change some config. on my DVD unit in my pc and etc? Please, I’m really like worried that I might not be able to enjoy the dvd soon. Please help

Yes, you will be able to play them, but you will have to change the region code on your dvd drive. The big problem is you can only change the region code 5 times. You can change the region code by going to My Computer, right click on the DVD drive, select Properties from the drop down menu. Go to the Hardware tab, select the DVD drive and click on Properties. Go to the DVD Region tab. BE CAREFUL, IT YOU ACCIDENTALLY CHOSE THE WRONG REGION, THAT WILL COUNT AS A CHANGE!

Alternatively, you can buy a second DVD drive (they’re so cheap) and set it for Region 2 (UK) permanently.

Hope this helps!

Can you recommend a multi-region DVD player with the ‘bookmark’ and ‘time remaining’ facilities?

September 23, 2009 - 6:31 am 2 Comments

My multi-region DVD player went kaput recently and I’m looking to replace it. This has been harder than I thought, as nowadays companies like Sony are reluctant to make their players multi-region. I have also become used to the ‘bookmark’ option on my old player, as it allows me to resume watching a film I started days ago, as well as a ‘time remaining’ facility that tells me how long the program I’m watching lasts (which is a godsend when you start watching what appears to be a 5 min featurette that actually is an hour long)!

Searching online is proving difficult, as online stores rarely mention little pluses like these, so if you know of a good multi-region dvd player (standard dvds, not HD/Blue Ray) I could get in the UK with one or both of these features you would be doing me a tremendous favour by telling me! Thanks!

I am intrigued by your statement, "…as nowadays companies like Sony are reluctant to make their players multi-region".

I have owned two Sony DVD recorders, my current one being less than 9 months old, and they have both been multi-region from new.

In fact most DVD players and recorders sold in the U.K. these days ARE multi-region. The player manufacturers always opposed the Region concept, which was forced onto the industry by the film companies.

this is how they work
Region code 0 Informal term meaning "worldwide". Region 0 is not an official setting; discs that bear the region 0 symbol either have no flag set or have region 1–6 flags set.

region 5 African countries not explicitly included in other regions, Indian subcontinent, countries included in the former Soviet Union, Belarus, Mongolia, North Korea

region 6 People’s Republic of China (except Macau and Hong Kong)

region 7 Reserved for future use (found in use on protected screener copies of MPAA-related DVDs and "media copies" of pre-releases in Asia)

region 8 International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, etc.[1] ALL Region ALL discs have all 8 flags set, allowing the disc to be played in any locale on any player.

Do multi region DVD players on all regions?

multi region dvd’s may not play all regions.
in the blurb that came with it it will give the region codes that it will play or it will say set to region 0.
if it is region 0 then it will play any dvd from any country.
usa dvd’s use a different picture signal than we do (our’s is pal)
and even region 0 may not play all usa dvd’s
